Form Honing - New optimisation potential for piston engines

The existing machining of internal combustion engines demands cylinder bores with high cylindricity and surface quality. However, the machining macro shape is not preserved. In operational condition, complex distortive mechanisms occur which deform the cylinder bore. Gehring Technologies has developed a honing process which does not aim at a cylindrical machined shape but which already takes machining deformation into account in order to ensure cylindrical bore surfaces under certain operational conditions.

Process chain for the manufacture of thermally coated cylinder bores

Thermally sprayed cylinder bores are manufactured in a complex process chain. The roughening using a variant of fine drilling is followed by the HVOF process as a thermal wire spraying process. The subsequent water blasting serves to eliminate the overspray underneath the bore in the crankcase. The concluding honing produces a liner surface which has superior tribological properties and is appropriate for the functions.

Functionally Adapted Dinal Machining for Cylinder Bores made of Cast Iron

The cylinder bore is of interest for functional and production development processes. The cylinder bore of the piston stroke engine is the place of the highest friction efficiency and its topographical design is decisive for the oiol consumption and the emission of modern motor-verhicles, a challenge for engine development and production engineers. Gehring GmbH & Co. KG, Ostfildern, Germany, is an experienced partner for therealization of efficient cylinder bores.

Gear Wheel Honing,

Finer Points

The honing of gears, by definition, facilitates ease of operation, low noise and smoother performance in a transmission. Honing also contributes to reduced friction in the powertrain. Both the intense cutting (roughing process) as well as the functionally fine finishing of transmission gears can be performed in one setup, on one machine. Honing in mass production is a well-established process.
